WMTS 1.0

WMTS is much like the OGC's popular Web Map Server (WMS) but it enables better server performance in applications that involve many simultaneous requests. To improve performance, instead of creating a new image for each request, WMTS returns small pre-generated images (e.g., PNG or JPEG) or reuses identical previous requests that follow a discrete set of tile matrices.

Current WMTS version is 1.0.0. Specification and schemas are available at the main OGC web site: http://www.opengeospatial.org/standards/wmts.

Development of abstract and executable tests suites (ETS) for WMTS clients and servers  is underway by the lead of Image Matters. The current draft of the WMTS abstract test suite is at https://svn.opengeospatial.org/ogc-projects/cite/scripts/wmts/1.0.0/trunk/web.

OGC Members with WMTS client and server implementations are invited to become WMTS CITE Initiative sponsors by making these resources available for free for “black box” testing in WMTS executable test suite development. The first three implementations to pass 100% of the testing process while at the release candidate phase will have their Trademark License Fee waived through the end of their first complete annual licensing period.

WMTS client implementations that may be run on Windows 7 platforms are required. WMTS server implementations are required that may be accessed on the World Wide Web, that may be installed and run on Windows XP or Windows 7 platforms, or that may be accessed on a private LAN at the WMTS CITE Initiative sponsors’ discretion.

Results of test execution using client and server implementations will be provided to WMTS CITE Initiative sponsors during the course of ETS development to facilitate bug fixes and product enhancements, but will otherwise remain confidential.
